Privacy Policy

Last updated 22 October 2026

Groat keeps your expenses on your device. The only things that ever leave it are what you export, and a question you ask Groat, which is recorded without anything that identifies you.

What the app stores

Every expense you record — the amount, category, date, any note, and the place if you add one — is saved in a database file inside the app’s own storage on your device. So are your settings and your categories.

What leaves your device

Nothing, unless you choose to send it.

Apart from Ask Groat and places, described below, Groat makes no network requests. It has no account system, no analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising, and no third-party SDKs that phone home.

Data leaves the app when you tap Export. Groat writes a CSV or Excel file and hands it to your device’s standard share sheet, and you pick where it goes — Files, Mail, a messaging app, whatever you choose. That destination is outside Groat, and whatever you send it to is governed by that app’s own privacy policy.

Places

When you tap Place to say where something was spent, Groat asks for your location — only then, only while you use the app, and only with your permission. Your iPhone’s Apple Maps service uses it to suggest the shops and places around you, and to find one you search for; those lookups go to Apple under Apple’s privacy policy, not to Groat. The place you pick — its name, a line of its address and where it is — is saved with that entry on your device and nowhere else. It is not sent to Ask Groat. Without location permission you can still search for a place by name.

Ask Groat

Ask Groat lets you ask a question about your own money in your own words. It is the one part of Groat that goes online, and it only does so when you ask.

When you send a question, Groat sends the following to an AI provider to produce the answer: your question, the earlier turns of that conversation, a summary of all your entries (monthly totals per category and currency for the last twelve months, and one total per month and a split per year before that, and your budgets), and your most recent entries — their date, category, amount and note.

The providers are Google (Gemini), Groq and OpenRouter, tried in that order; the question goes to one of them. What they do with it is governed by their own terms and privacy policies. The question passes through Groat's own server at groat.money on its way, which holds the keys to those providers. It keeps no account and records nothing that ties a question to you or your device: not your IP address, not a user or device ID.

So that we can check the answers are right and fix what goes wrong, the server sends a record of each question to Langfuse, a service that stores it for Groat: everything sent to the AI provider (your question, the earlier turns, and the summary and recent entries described above), the answer, which model answered and how long it took. Langfuse keeps these records under its own privacy policy, and they are not deleted on a schedule. Groat uses them only to check and improve Ask Groat, and never sells or shares them. The conversation lives in the app only until you close it.

If you tap Speak or the microphone to say an entry or a question, your iPhone's own speech recognition turns what you say into words as you speak — on the device for languages that support it, otherwise by Apple's speech service under Apple's privacy policy. Groat records no audio and sends none. The words are then sent, and recorded, just like a typed question. Nothing you say is saved as an entry until you confirm it.

Nothing is sent if you never open Ask Groat, and nothing is sent while you are simply looking at the screen. A question goes when you tap Send; the microphone listens only while it is on, after you tap it.

Tips

If you choose to tip from Support Groat, the payment is handled by Apple as an In-App Purchase, or, on the US App Store and on this website, by Stripe on its own secure page. Groat never sees your card or your Apple account, keeps no record of tips in the app, and unlocks nothing by them.

Deleting your data

You can delete all expenses at any time from Settings. Deleting the app removes its database along with it. Your expenses are stored nowhere else, so there is nothing for us to delete on your behalf and no account to close. The records of questions asked of Ask Groat carry nothing that identifies who asked, so there is no way to pick out yours; Ask Groat is optional, and if you would rather nothing you ask is recorded, don't use it.

Children

Groat collects nothing that identifies anyone, including children.
